Church Lunch for Marie Curie
The tables were set, the sandwiches freshly made, mince pies piled high, the tea brewing and a flurry of blue, yellow and white balloons brightened the hall. It was Sunday 6th December and the Girls’ Brigade was hosting a Church Lunch to raise funds for Marie Curie. The Brigader Section had thought up the idea after they had been set a challenge. I regularly visit the Company to lead interactive sessions about exploring the Christian faith. The girls are well known for their enthusiasm and hard work so after looking at various bible passages, the girls were collectively allocated a sum of money. The aim was to find out “how much good could be done”. This wasn’t about trying to turn a small investment into huge personal profit, like Dragons’ Den on TV, but they did have some very good ideas on how to use the capital. It was all about stewardship, using whatever you have as best you can. Using our resources wisely, no matter how small, can sometimes have greater benefit than misusing a huge pot of money and effectively throwing it away.
In the end, one of the girls thought it would be great to invite people to sit down after a church parade and enjoy some fellowship over a well-prepared lunch. Before long, a team of enthusiastic girls was putting together a shopping list and June booked the date in the Church diary. Big thanks to Morrisons Bishopbriggs for kindly donating all the mince pies, too!
Bailey, Danielle, Kirsty and Molly showed us a thing or two about setting up an efficient production line to butter bread, add the cheese, ham and tuna/ sweetcorn fillings and arrange them on trays. Tracey and I felt almost surplus to requirements with their great organisational skills… There are definitely some future leaders here, who are eager to see a project through, even if it means being at the church by 9am on a Sunday morning to prepare then staying on afterwards to wash dishes, brush and mop up. Most of us spent the rest of the day together, shared dinner and visited another church in the evening. The girls and leaders are a great bunch of people and such fun to be with!
There were enough sandwiches to offer some platters to Taransay Court and a few boxes of mince pies to the Church’s Social Hour, whose Christmas party was the next day. Donations from the Church totalled £76, which was very gratefully received by Marie Curie. Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a great event to be part of. It was an excellent example of team work in support of a good local charity and the girls should be very proud of what they achieved.
With thanks,
Isabella Stevenson (nee Turnbull)
