Dear All, As I write this the sun is shining. It is not only shining through the window, it is also shining in my heart and mind. I just had a telephone call from a lovely lass called Rebecca at the Climate Challenge Fund who told me that our application for funds to employ an architect to consult with the community and draw up plans for a new set of community buildings in the heart of Milton, including a new place of worship, has been successful. We got the money! Whooohooo!!! That means that instead of just dreaming dreams, as I suggested you do in last month’s letter, we can actually begin to put some of those dreams into action. Over the next weeks and months I hope you will take the opportunity to get involved, to let your voice be heard, so that it will be your building. But we don’t just want to hear your voice; we are looking for people to get involved in a new organisation to make this building happen. At the moment the money has been given to the congregation of Colston Milton for us to employ an architect. But our dream is that the building will be more than a place of worship, it might have a café in it, it might have halls for dancing, and bingo, and family celebrations, it might have gardens to grow food, it might have whatever you want in it, and it will be owned by you. It won’t be owned by the council, or a housing association, or the Church of Scotland, it will be owned by the people of Milton. This means you need to get involved and encourage people you know to get involved. The vision of a healthy community is part of what God hopes for in Milton and across this city. Milton has lots of problems, not least drugs and violence and alcohol, and I have been sickened to hear about some of the attacks that have taken place in broad daylight in the middle of Milton. The answer to these problems is not to run and hide, or close the curtains, or pretend it won’t affect you, but to come together and build a better future. Milton has so many strengths, so many people with so many skills and interest in each other. Last month I asked you to dream a dream for Milton? Dream about the place that you would like it to be, and then with God’s help start making that dream a reality. Now is the time to start making it a reality. It is easy to get cynical about government and the council, but the Scottish Government believes in Milton enough to give us a significant amount of money to try and build ourselves a new set of buildings. Buildings that we will help design, and build, and own and run. Buildings that will not even need heating. Buildings that will last. Buildings that will be beautiful and open to all of us: Catholics and Protestants, churchy people and non-churchy people, young and old, straight and gay, black and white, addicts and clean. The only way that will happen is if we make it happen. If we want the new buildings to be safe, then we must not allow violence to happen there. If we want it to be a place for all, then we must make sure that all are welcome. I am excited. I am very excited. I hope you are too. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Christopher |
